The Rule of Threes

The Rule of Threes

If you’ve ever ended the day staring at a long, unfinished to-do list, you know how defeating it can feel. The problem isn’t you, it’s your system. Most planners and productivity advice push us to do more. But real progress comes from doing less, and doing it better.

That’s why I live by The Rule of Threes.

Here’s how it works:

  • 3 Goals a Month: Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, I only set three focused goals each month. This keeps me clear on priorities and avoids overwhelm.

  • 3 Major Tasks a Week: Each week, I identify three major tasks that will move my goals forward. These are the needle-movers, not busywork.

  • 3 To-Do List Tasks a Day: Finally, I set no more than three meaningful to-dos each day. It’s realistic, achievable, and gives me a sense of accomplishment rather than guilt at the end of the day.

The Rule of Threes creates structure, focus, and freedom. It prevents the trap of overcommitment and instead helps you build momentum consistently.

That’s why The Essential Planner is built with this framework in mind. It gives you space to focus on what truly matters without drowning in endless lists or rigid schedules.

Imagine closing each day feeling proud, not pressured. That’s the power of The Rule of Threes.
